Smb driving me mad

  • until recently had an xbox attached to router and could access files on my laptop running xp, using workgroup (smb) network.

xbmc now refuses to access files giving "nt_status_object_name_not_found". both xbox and laptop can access the net and i have can get tfp access and use the web server to control the xbox from the laptop.

i've looked around for tutorials but they don't seem to cover xp. all ms updates incl service pack 2 have been downloaded, and i wonder if that is the problem.

    can anyone help me please?

  • do the following on your pc:

find the folder you want to share
right-click and pick "sharing & security"
    check "share this folder"
    click "permissions"
    click "add..."
type "guest" in the "object names to select" box
    click ok
    click ok
    click ok

you should now be able to browse right into that folder from xbmc, or at least map to it like smb://computername/foldername

  • thanks for the help but i still can't get it to work!

am running xp home so can;t run the secpol.msc program.

i've set up a user account as xbox with password xbox on the pc. the pc's ip is 168.192.1.100, the router 168.192.1.1

    i've editted the xboxmediacentre.xml to smb://xbox:xbox@192.168.1.100/musica/
which by all accounts should work without changing the security settings but all it does is ask me for the user name and password.

i think i must be missing something really simple - but what??

    tia
