Does chewing food count as consumption?

  • I am on a diet and get a lot of cravings for unhealthy food. I don't want to eat it, but am I still consuming the calories and fat by just chewing it?

  • not if you dont swallow it
    otherwise you havnt consumed it
    duh

  • yes you can since digestion begins in the mouth once the saliva touches the food you are digesting.

  • you probably are. Some foods are broken down and absorbed in the mouth. It depends on the food, but if its junk food, then there is a chance majority of it is absorbed already before you swallow....so nice try, but chewing unhealthy foods is not a healthy alternative.

  • What kind of diet is this? Chewing and spitting is common in a lot of starvation diets and, consequently, is often present in eating disorders. If you are doing this for health reasons, I hope you're working with a professional.

To answer your question, yes, actually you are consuming some of the calories in the food because it is impossible to spit everything out and because saliva contains some of the digestive enzymes responsible for the breakdown of carbs. So you are most likely ingesting some sugar from what you chew. On top of that, it doesn't do wonders for your teeth.

The danger is, of course, "accidentally" swallowing the food and then, out of panic, forcing yourself to throw up. Talking out of experience here. Be careful and talk to a nutritionist/therapist if this continues to be a problem - hopefully you're working with somebody on this diet.

  • very little, some things will be absorbed in the oral mucosa. I think the amount would be so small it wouldn't matter.

  • not if u dont swallow it.

  • Chewing food is part of the digestive system. I think you are torturing yourself by just chewing food instead of swallowing it. You're actually wasting food this way.

    VIVA LA RAZA!

  • chew gum. It gets your sugar craving, and keeps your mind off of food.

    God bless!

  • No...must swallow.

  • no

  • Nope not really. You might pick up a few calories from stuff that gets dissolved in your saliva and then is swallowed. But if you just chew and spit it doesn't count as consumption. Your body has to digest and absorb the food in order to extract the energy (Calories) from it.
