Admirals and Ambassadors

  • TWA and US Airways are two of the few airlines that sell lifetime memberships to their airport clubs at $2,475 and $2,950, respectively.

With those two airlines lined up to be bought by American and United, I wonder whether the buyers will honor these lifetime memberships within their own clubs. If so, would that make these a good buy in the next couple of months? A lifetime membership to the US Airways Club looks particularly attractive because it offers access to American's Admirals Club until August, then possible lifetime entree to United's Red Carpet Club.

  • Has anyone looked at the fine print in the agreement you signed? Does it say anything about the airline going bankrupt or being sold?

  • I have lifetime w/spouse memberships in both the Admirals and Ambassadors clubs. I wonder what I should ask for if they merge?

  • I don't know if the same thing will happen, but I had a PanAm lifetime membership in the Clipper Club. (When I bought the membership, I thought it was my lifetime not PA's.) After PA went away and UA and DL got their routes:
UA said I could show the PA card when flying their pacific routes and get into the Red Carpet club (I have not tried that since I hate UA.)
After I sent DL a photocopy of the PA card, they issued me a lifetime membership in the Crown Room .
I also have a lifetime membership in the Ambassador Club and am waiting with interest to see what happens.

  • This is a really intriguing idea. What's the consensus on taking the risk?

  • In the past two years, I have bought life memberships with TW, HP, and US for just this reason. I got TW and HP just before the price doubled.

  • FWIW, I wouldn't buy any TW or US life memberships now. I'm sure that there will some kind of "requalification" (with a cost) to transfer it to the Club of one of the airlines purchasing the assets or stock. Remember, they will receive nothing from what is paid and neither will be a pure merger.

I had a Lifetime membership in the EA Ionosphere Club. I cannot remember hearing anything from CO until several months after the demise of EA. Then they offered to transfer and continue life membership in their Presidents Club if I made 4(?) RT flights within 6 months.

Unfortunately I had zero CO routes and destinations in my travel plans; and, at that time, CO was the pits in service and EWR was about the same. So I passed up the offer.

I was chagrinned to later learn from a semi-retired friend that he simply bought four cheap (but refundable) PHX-LAS-PHX tickets, made photocopies, submitted them and later turned them in for refund. He is a lifetime CO club member. I have only a possible collector's item EA plastic card!

  • Remember that Continental's President's club does not accept any Eastern card issued after Eastern's bankruptcy. So it may be ok if you buy the membership before Wednesday.
